In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1902 novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Sherlock Holmes famously pointed to the dog that did not bark. A modern Sherlock, looking for clues about the future of the stock market, might examine the positive trends that don't make the front page. Specifically, while the whole world is transfixed by the Dogs of War, barking their views about Syria this week, it might pay dividends to listen to the older mutts that are no longer barking - yesterday's biggest fears that suddenly fell silent.
In particular, whatever happened to the major headlines (and excuses) for the stock market's corrections over the last four years? For instance, we endured three straight Greek crises in May of 2010, 2011 and 2012, but the Greek dog did not bark in 2013. In addition, we endured eurozone crises in Italy, Spain and Portugal preceded by terrible financial crises in two north European islands, namely Iceland and Ireland.
Then there was the fear of a China slowdown or a Japanese collapse or an overall global recession. What happened there? Did China ever slow down? Did Japan collapse? Did the world economy grind to a halt?

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Fede Zaldua]
Imperial trades cheaply and pays a great, sustainable and for-ever-growing 4.5% cash dividend yield. The company's 2014 10.4 times P/E multiple represents a 40% discount to what most European consumer staples sell for. Besides, the owner of brands such as Davidoff and Gauloises, trades at a much more conservative level than its direct tobacco peers. Philip Morris International (PM) and British American Tobacco (BTI) sell for 2014 15 and 14.2 times earnings, respectively.

In this series I'm subjecting companies to scrutiny under five headings: prospects, performance, management, safety, and valuation. How doesBritish American Tobacco (LSE: BATS ) (NYSEMKT: BTI ) measure up?
- [By Jacob Roche]
A recent report from research group KPMG, and commissioned by Philip Morris (NYSE: PM ) , revealed that while total consumption of cigarettes in Europe has fallen in recent years, the illegal contraband and counterfeit trade has grown from 8.3% of total consumption to 11.1%. The report suggests that the high profitability and low risk of penalties attracts organized crime, which can use the trade as a cash cow to fund far more objectionable activities. An ad from British American Tobacco (NYSEMKT: BTI ) goes as far as to suggest that the trade could even be indirectly funding terrorism.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Damian Illia]
In a previous article we saw the 13-F's holdings of Absolute Return Investors. Here, let麓s analyze one of them, Chevron Corporation (CVX), and see if it is appropriate to be in that long portfolio. The firm does not need too much introduction. The company upstream operations include exploring, developing and producing crude oil and natural gas, and processing, liquefaction, transportation and regasification associated with liquefied natural gas. The company downstream operations include refining crude oil into petroleum products, and manufactures and markets commodity petrochemicals, plastics for industrial uses and fuel and lubricant additives. The firm's largest competitors include BP Plc (BP) and Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM).
- [By Jeff Reeves]
But it hard to fight against this kind of big negativity, or the fact that other stocks like Chevron (CVX) or U.K.-based BP (BP) look like better bargains based on forward earnings projections and current valuations.
- [By Aaron Levitt]
Perhaps more importantly, Exxon is now finding that oil more cheaply than its rivals. According to data provided by Bloomberg, XOM spends about $19.27 to find a barrel of crude oil. That less than the $21.48 per-barrel at rival Chevron (CVX) and $22.66 for beleaguered BP (BP). With a plethora of new projects set to begin pumping out crude in 2015 and beyond, Exxon looks to continue minting plenty of cash.

Last year, the story for many of Europe major integrated energy stocks wasn that pleasant. Higher drilling costs and absolutely abysmal crack spreads on refining hurt profits and crimped share prices. From BP (BP) to Italy ENI (E), many of the European majors suffered.

Is Europe back?
Certainly, some of the enthusiasm about Europe has to do with the stabilization of economic prospects throughout the region. Germany, France, and Spain are still reporting sluggish GDP numbers, but some early signs suggest that the recession could already have hit bottom in many countries in Europe. Perhaps more importantly, just the fact that conditions on the continent haven't gotten markedly worse has seemed to bolster investor confidence. In particular, Spain's recovery has given investors in Telefonica (NYSE: TEF ) new hope that efforts to keep its telecom business strong not just in Europe but in Latin America as well could bear fruit.
