Best Electric Utility Stocks To Watch Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Chuy's Holdings (NASDAQ: CHUY  ) were getting spat out by investors today, falling as much as 12% after an unsavory earnings report.

So what: The restaurant chain of the same name posted a 24.6% gain in sales to $46.7 million, slightly ahead of estimates, and comparable sales were up 2.3%. Earnings per share jumped from a penny a year ago to $0.16, beating expectations by $0.02. CEO Steve Hislop said, "We generated impressive revenue growth during a challenging quarter for the industry," and he credited operators for driving profitability. Chuy's narrowed its EPS guidance for the year, saying it now expects EPS of $0.67 to $0.69, in line with estimates, and sees same-store sales growth of 1% to 1.5%.

Now what: Shares of the Mexican-food chain bounced back after dipping early in the session today, finishing down just 3.3%. While the company beat estimates, it seems investors were expecting more, especially on the same-store-sales front. Nearly all of Chuy's sales growth came from new restaurants, as opposed to organic, higher-margin growth from stores already open. Same-store sales are also often a sign of brand strength. With its P/E over 50 and hardly any organic growth to speak of, I'd stay away from Chuy's.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Moreover, historians point to the 1933 executive order that required individuals to deliver gold coins, bullion, and certificates to banks in exchange for regular currency at a rate of $20.67 per ounce as being functionally equivalent to confiscation. With the government proceeding to devalue the dollar to $35 per gold ounce the following year, those who complied with the order suffered a substantial loss of purchasing power. Indeed, many gold investors use that same argument in arguing against bullion ETFs SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) , iShares Gold (NYSEMKT: IAU  ) , and iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) , preferring instead to take physical possession of their gold and silver to ensure its safekeeping themselves.

  • [By Quoth the Raven]

The other common way to invest is through ETFs such as iShares Gold Trust (IAU), which basically track the price of the commodity by physically purchasing bullion. The ETFs asset price reflect the price as which it trades for. If the underlying asset is silver, the ETF trades proportional to what the silver's worth.

  • [By Sean Williams]

The first method is by purchasing an ETF that closely tracks the underlying price of gold. The iShares Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: IAU  ) and SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) are two easy ways of buying into an ETF that holds physical gold without having to go through a physical gold dealer and taking delivery of the product. Also, both ETFs are extremely liquid, which means that you can access your money through your favorite brokerage by buying or selling anytime you need. The downside, of course, is that physical gold offers no dividend yield, so it's all about the price appreciation potential here.

Julio Cortez/AP NEW YORK -- Many U.S. retailers had to ramp up promotions last month as shoppers continued to watch their spending during the holiday season, hitting profits at several chains. L Brands (LB) cut its earnings forecast for the holiday quarter Thursday after reporting disappointing December sales at its Victoria Secret and La Senza chains. The company said it had to offer more deals than expected, the second month in a row it has had to do so. Even retailers that saw big sales gains, such as Kay Jewelers parent Signet Jewelers (SIG), weren't spared. In fact, all of its peers, including Total (NYSE: TOT  ) , ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) , Chevron (NYSE: CVX  ) , and BP (NYSE: BP  ) , blamed weak refining margins for disappointing financial performances last year. Exxon's fourth-quarter downstream earnings plunged by $852millionto $916million, while Chevron's international downstream earnings plunged by nearly 80% to $125million.

Hot Consumer Service Stocks To Watch For 2014

The choice of Tokyo to host the 2020 Games is a safe one Japan has ample experience in putting on international sporting events, and Tokyo boasts a first-class transportation system that can move hundreds of thousands of tourists around efficiently, as well as a large, well-regulated hotel sector that can house them comfortably, without too much price-gouging, as my colleague, the longtime Japan hand Eamonn Fingleton, notes.

That one of the reasons why the second Tokyo Games isn likely to provide much of a jolt to the economy the city nvironmentally friendlybid was predicated on making maximum use of previously built facilities and infrastructure; the roughly 1 trillion yen ($10 billion) in planned spending is well below that for the London and Beijing Games.

In the run-up to the 1964 Tokyo Games, Japan undertook herculean building projects, including the construction of a network of highways around Tokyo and the first of its Shinkansen high-speed rail lines. All told, spending was equivalent to 3.6% of 1964 GDP, according to a research note from Nomura. This time around, the Tokyo bid pegged the value added to the economy at 1.4 trillion yen, or a paltry 0.3% of 2012 GDP. And that spread out over the eight years from 2013 to 2020.

In January 2014, the Company announced the closing of the acquisition of Rockgate by Denison Mines Corp. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By The Energy Report]

DS: It's certainly good news. Elimination of the non-resident ownership policy [NROP] will permit European Union-based companies to own a majority stake in an operating uranium mine. That opens the door for companies like Rio Tinto Plc (RIO) and AREVA SA (ARVCF) [AREVA:EPA] to push forward with development of existing deposits or to buy more uranium assets in Canada. Accordingly, it increases takeover potential for companies like Denison Mines Corp. (DNN).

Technology juggernauts Amazon and Microsoft (MSFT) kickstarted the rally with solid quarterly results, while stronger-than-expected revenues and shipping volume came in from United Parcel Service (UPS).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One cyclical consumer player that insiders are buying up a large amount of stock in here is Biglari (BH), which is currently engaged in investment management and the franchising and operating of restaurants. Insiders are buying this stock into modest strength, since shares are up 8.7% so far in 2013.

Biglari has a market cap of $605 million and an enterprise value of $688 million. This stock trades at a cheap valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 4.83 and a forward price-to-earnings of 29.38. Its estimated growth rate for this quarter is 42%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $153.57 million and its total debt is $236.16 million.

The CEO and chairman of the board just bought 5,165 shares, or about $1.36 million worth of stock, at $265 a share.

From a technical perspective, BH is currently trending above its 200-day moving average and just below its 50-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last month and change, with shares moving between $408.25 on the downside and $429.97 on the upside. Shares of BH are now starting to push within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

If you're bullish on BH, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some near-term support levels at $410 to $408.25, and then once breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance levels $428.85 to $429.97 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 10,146 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then BH will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that started at $467.89 a share.

Best Consumer Stocks To Own For 2014

It was inevitable:Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) had no choice but to pursue the small-sized tablet segment if it hopes to be relevant. Consumers are increasingly voting with their wallets that smaller tablet form factors are the way to go. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) has now jumped into that market segment with the iPad Mini, an implicit concession that Steve Jobs was wrong when he proclaimed that the perfect tablet size was around 10 inches.

Thus far, Microsoft's forays into the tablet market have been with larger devices, including its own Surface tablet that sports a 10.6-inch display. Most Windows 8 and Windows RT devices made by OEMs have also been in the full-sized segment. That's all changed with the Acer Iconia W3 that was just unveiled at Computex Taipei.

The Iconia W3 is being billed as the "industry's first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet," and its 8.1-inch display will compete directly with the iPad Mini's 7.9-inch screen. An Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) Atom chip is found inside, which promises all-day battery performance. Intel has been making headway in tablet wins, including scoring a spot in Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 (also with an Atom processor). Intel's pricier chips also contribute to the higher price of the Iconia W3, which will retail for $379.

One under-$10 toy player that's trending very close to triggering a major breakout trade is Jakks Pacific (JAKK), which is a producer and marketer of children's toys and other consumer products. This stock has been destroyed by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 60%.

If you take a look at the chart for Jakks Pacific, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last two months and change, with shares plunging from its high of $11.75 to its recent low of $4.82 a share. During that downtrend, shares of JAKK have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of JAKK look like they might be ready to see an end to its downside volatility in the short-term if the recent lows can hold. I believe this due to the fact that JAKK has started to move sideways and trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in JAKK if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $5.08 to $5.27 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 695,817 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then JAKK will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $5.68 to its 50-day moving average at $6.07 a share. Any high-volume move above its 50-day will then put $7 to $8 into range for shares of JAKK.

Traders can look to buy JAKK off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $4.87 to $4.82 a share. One can also buy JAKK off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

In September 2011, Oaktree went public with the offer but Jakks management adopted poison pill in an attempt to rebuff the plan [bloomberg]. The company now trades at $5 and change. The question is, is it cheap enough to buy?

Dr. Daniel Kahneman, winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize in economics, joins us to discuss his book Thinking, Fast and Slow.

In this video segment, Kahneman explains two types of thinking in terms a newsroom filled with reporters and an overworked editor. Who determines the content of your "newspaper"? The full version of the interview can be seen here.A transcript follows the video.

Morgan Housel: Let's talk a little about your book, Thinking, Fast and Slow. The theme throughout the book is that there are two types of thinking, fast and slow; System 1 and System 2. Tell me about the difference between the two.

Daniel Kahneman: Fast thinking is, I think, most of the way that we think. It's what your memory delivers to you. You start talking, and you talk. You don't have to deliberate about one word and then the other. You walk. You don't deliberate and decide to put one foot in front of the other.

Most of what we do sort of comes automatically. Most of what we do is highly skilled and emotional -- some of it is emotional, much of it is highly skilled -- and all of that is automatic. There's just an awful lot of automatic stuff that goes on.

It's certainly not as big as Berry Plastics Group Inc. (NYSE:BERY). It's not even as big as Tredegar Corporation (NYSE:TG). There's one big way AEP Industries (NASDAQ:AEPI) can certainly compete head-on with BERY and TG right now, however... as an investment opportunity. Thanks to the bullish bump AEPI gave us last week, a long-standing selloff has been revered, and there's a whole lot of ground to make up.

Advisors' Opinion:

So even after all the hacking and slashing, France Telecom's yield is orders of magnitude richer than American contemporaries AT&T (NYSE: T  ) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) . It's fully comparable to the high-yield payouts of rural American telecoms such as CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL  ) and Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN  ) , but with the added bonus of growth plans in emerging markets. The French stock strikes a unique balance between generous yields, large-scale operations, and vibrant growth plans.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

We continue to view the dividend as the main attraction for Frontier shares, supported by FCF stability and limited near-term debt maturities. While the copper-based telephone business is largely in decline, there is a significant growth opportunity to increase share in acquired Verizon properties that Frontier management appears to have begun monetizing. Our target price implies 5.7x 2014E EBITDA and an 8% dividend yield, which we find attractive versus CenturyLink (CTL) at 5.5x with a 6.5% yield.
